Inspirational Sites
Here is a list of sites (with notes) that were inspirational to the construction and design of this website
Sites with a star [★] were especially influential on my site.
★ motherfuckingwebsite - Good reminder to get back to basics.
★ makefrontendshitagain - The opposite of motherfuckingwebsite. Good reminder to not be afraid to spice things up.
Tomas Miskov’s site - A website that uses the theme my site was originally based on. Inspired my (now defunct) bookshelf feature, which is now a simple list.
★ Paul Graham’s site - Same argument as Tomas Miskov’s site. The lack of style is arguably more of a flex than anything else. And if he wanted, Paul Graham could certainly have a better looking site.
Dennis Ritchie’s site - The man himself. A perfect example that if you have the proper reputation (and if Dennis Ritchie doesn’t, no one does), your site’s content speaks for itself. The best raw html you’ll ever see.
Joe Coleman’s site - A simple site with a cool slider gimmick.
arzoumanian.fr - A cool site, though a bit headache-inducing
lokasasmita.com - I really like the mouse interaction on the title. The blog section is very cool too. I played with a picture preview for articles for a bit before deciding not to implement it (at least at the time of writing this).
makepresentable.com - Love the purple, love the font.
a11y project - Love the font choice and overall design.
The Warren Trust - Cool dual screen scrolling. Graceful js disabling.
★ Mike Mai’s site - SUPER tasteful while remaining artistic. Love this site, love the fonts, love the colors. Beautiful site.
iyo - Kind of a heavy website, but really cool interactive gimmick.
studio lumio - Cool aberration effect. Considering adding something similar (but lightweight) to my site for the front title.
Andy Matuschak’s site - Interesting design and bold color palette. Not for everyone.
★ Patrick Collison’s site - Very simple. Content first. I love it. Absolutely shits on your mobile view formatting.
★ neil.computer - Love the adherence to tables and file system metaphor for navigation. Just a great site.
tom7.org - A lot of love and passion. A very dense site.
★ theorangeduck - LOVE this site. The use of hex values to standardize the size of headers is cool, though i’m not sure how intuitive it is for people unfamiliar with hex values or computer concepts. The ascii patterns for titles is SO COOL. I also love the simple style of the page, and how it doesn’t adjust for mobile. Huge influence.
WWW - The first website. Cool raw html.
Derek Sivers’ site - Cool guy, cool site.
pudding.cool - Really cool visualizations. The web as a medium done right.
★ 1mb club - Great collection of small sites. It is commonly said that restriction breeds creativity.
★ 512kb club - See above.
★ webring.xxiivv.com - A lot of cool sites on here, many of which are featured on this page. A glimmering example of what the internet and community should mean.
★ t0.vc - Minimal no css site. What is cool is that it is also fully compatible with the author’s main site, which uses css.
Lynn Fisher’s site - A cool site with deliberate design choices.
maya.land - Cool site like Lynn Fisher’s site. A cool personal landing page type site.
shermy’s forest - Very cool neocities-esque site. Check out the animated series on youtube as well.
Satyarth’s site - Cool minimal style. Really like the terminal interface at the top in place of a header.
★ palomakop.tv - REALLY cool site. Cool style, very bold. The background is an obvious influence on my site. Everything works well and seems highly deliberate, from the color choices to the icons to the font to the subtle animations. 5 stars.
are.na - Love are.na. A link to a great channel as well (see above).
maximkich.com - Cool aesthetic, love the terminal metaphor for navigation.
Lee Tusman’s site - Interesting projects and style.
Steph Ango’s site - Very well done minimalist blog.
★ emrah.ca - Great terminal system metaphor. I really like that page content loads seamlessly “in terminal”.
★ jasmcole.com - Very cool diagrams and visuals. Love the mandelbrot effect at the top.
Tom Macwright’s site - Awesome blog setup. Love the minimal display of content, very respectful of the user’s attention.
Robin Rendle’s site - Interesting file directory metaphor for page navigation. The stories each having their own style is also really nice.
akirarabelais.com - Not sure what is happening on this site but the style is cool. Very aesthetically pleasing.
★ miguelmj.dev - Love the style. Very minimal, very well done. I think this uses no css too. Inspired a lot of things on my site, even if not visually reflected.
Jonathan Bucholz’s site - Cool minimal blog.
★ gr0k - No, not the twitter AI. LOVE the front page logo. Very good use of minimal web elements while maintaining a compelling and competitive style
★ kelp.lt - Cool blog style. Love the color palette. Really like the directory metaphor for navigation.
klaxzy.net - Awesome simple style. Bold.
taper - Online Magazine with some inspiring pieces.
fuckart - Very artsy. Don’t know what it means. Love it.
falai.se - Cool minimal blog.
★ brutalist web design - Sums up a lot of what I consider to be good web design. The site itself is very visually appealing.
★ w3teal.is-a.dev - Love the terminal. Love the simple text design. Will be working on a terminal based on this (if its not already on my site).
visual culture - Cool repository of stuff. Cool aesthetic as well.
